Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn. Giants Julian Fernandez Jersey .ca. Hi Kerry, Everyone does it, everyone knows it happens but what can referees to stop the delaying tactics used by teams after an icing call? In the first period between Vancouver and Buffalo on Sunday, Buffalo iced the puck and suddenly Zenon Konopka needed a new stick. However, it took the equipment manager about 30-40 seconds trying to find one and gave the team a quick rest. When he finally got near the faceoff dot, the linesman did a quick drop of the puck and the Canucks eventually scored off the resulting play. I know the Canucks sometimes will send in a winger to purposely get waved out to get a breather, but how long do referees give a team before they are able to give a delay of game penalty? Do they have to warn the team first? Gareth Gareth: Even though it is within the referees authority to assess a minor penalty once a player or team deliberately delays the game following an icing, I can think of far more appropriate situations for a referee to flex his muscles and assess a penalty. As you admit Gareth, everyone does it and everyone knows it happens. A warning would typically have to be issued before a delay of game penalty would be assessed in this situation. When Zenon Konopka felt it necessary to change his stick (for whatever reason) following the Sabres icing infraction the referee was caught between a rock and a hard place and must allow the player to obtain a replacement. Can you imagine the nuclear fallout for the ref, following the Canuck goal, if Konopka had been denied the change and his stick had broken on the ensuing face-off? Forcing Knopka to grab any old replacement off the bench other than his own pattern could also set the ref up for some abuse. In the course of a game there are times when a referee must dig his skates in and take a hard-line position but I believe a ref should pick his battles wisely and with good purpose. In my opinion, a slow face-off following an icing isnt typically worth throwing the gauntlet down. That being said, one thing that any referee has little tolerance for is to be publicly embarrassed and played for a fool. What I didnt much care for, as I watched this apparent "shell game" being play out at the Buffalo bench, were the snickers and laughter that took place at the referees expense. The equipment managers and training staff for the Buffalo Sabres are very professional in their duties; as are all NHL team equipment personnel. To believe that a players stick wasnt available in the rack just isnt within the realm of possibility. Gareth, let me suggest one possible way to deter a team from abusing rule 81.4—line changes on icing. My approach would have to laugh right along with them right up to the end of the little charade when Zenon Konopka was finally handed his replacement stick and before he sprinted to the face-off dot with a grin. At that point I would issue Coach Ted Nolan an "official warning" that any undue delay by him or his players on a future icing would result in bench minor penalty. I would be sure to say it with a smile on my face but there would be little doubt that the gauntlet had been dropped! You might also be curious Gareth (like me) as to why a lengthy rest delay was even required by the Sabres fourth line on just their fourth shift of the game; if in fact that was the intention of Zenon Konopka and the Sabres bench staff. Heres the interesting breakdown for you. The Sabres fourth line, comprised of Zenon Konopka, John Scott and Nicolas Deslauriers, had played a total of one minute and seventeen seconds (1:17) in three well spaced shifts prior to their fourth shift when the icing infraction was called. Their third shift lasted only 20 seconds and was followed by over two minutes of rest on the bench. The fouth line then changed on the fly and skated for 21 seconds prior to a 25 second breather before play resumed following a Canuck end zone face-off. Once the puck was dropped, they skated for another 13 seconds before the whistle blew for the icing call. I dont think these finely tuned athletes would have been all that fatigued considering my unofficial ice-tracker stats. If locating a missing stick at the Sabres bench is truly a ploy to slow things down after an icing, perhaps they should pick their spot more wisely and utilize it when players really are fatigued. In any event, this play should now be "one and done!" The gauntlet has been dropped I hope. Giants Aramis Garcia Jersey . Still, its a start. Josh Baileys goal with 1:40 left capped a furious third-period rally, and the Islanders edged the Penguins 4-3 on Friday night. Giants Kelby Tomlinson Jersey . The agreement comes a little more than one week after the video game manufacturer agreed to a $40 million settlement in a similar but separate case, bringing the total payout planned for athletes to $60 million, said Steve Berman, an attorney for the plaintiffs, and the NCAA.KANSAS CITY, Mo. - In the hours after a four-sack performance gave Justin Houston the Chiefs franchise record, all he could talk about was how close Kansas City came to making the playoffs.Houston insisted his new single-season mark would hit him some day. He might be on a new team by the time it happens. The Pro Bowl linebacker became a free agent when the season ended, putting the Chiefs in a difficult situation. Their attempts at striking a long-term deal last off-season when nowhere, and Houstons 22-sack season has given him even more leverage in negotiations. Its the part of the business side that I dont want to talk about, Chiefs general manager John Dorsey said Monday. I can say its ongoing business, ongoing conversation. If the Chiefs slap Houston with the franchise tag in March, they would have until July 15 to agree on a multiyear contract, so there is plenty of time to work out a multiyear contract. But if no deal is reached, the Chiefs would have to pay Houston a one-year deal averaging the top five salaries at his position. That temporary solution comes with its own problems. For one thing, the Chiefs would still be left negotiating with Houstons representatives on a long-term deal. But the more immediate issue is exactly how Houston is classified. He has always been listed as a linebacker, but he often lines up as a defensive end. And for the purposes of the franchise tag, defensive ends tend to get paid more than linebackers. Not surprisingly, the notoriously media-shy Houston refused to discuss his pending free agency after Sundays 19-7 victory over San Diego. He merely said, I havent even thought about that.Im still heartbroken about not going to the playoffs, Houston said. Thats what I base my goals on. The individual records, itll mean something when Im done playing. The records are piling up in a hurry.Houston finished just a half-sack behind Michael Strahans record for a single season set in 2001. The only other players with 22 sacks in a season were Mark Gastineau with the Jets in 1984 and Jared Allen, who once played in Kansas City, with the Vikings in 2011.His sack total edged Texans start J.J. Watt for the league lead, which means Houston will be the second recipient of thee Deacon Jones Award. Giants Tony Watson Jersey. The Colts Robert Mathis won it last year. Its something special to watch, Chiefs defensive back Ron Parker said. Watching how they game-plan for him and Tamba (Hali) all year round, its just crazy how they try to double-team him and chip him, and they still get off every weekend.Chiefs defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson even alluded to the Hall of Fame when describing Houston, even though hes only played four seasons in the league.I told him, Thats greatness, Vickerson said. He talks about it all the time, how he wants to put his name on that board. He wants to put on one of those yellow jackets at the end of his career. He has the right mindset. I couldnt be happier for him.Houston already has 48 1/2 sacks in his career, three shy of passing Mike Bell for fifth in franchise history. His two-season total of 33 is a half-sack behind the best two-year stretch of Thomas Hall of Fame career, and his 13 multi-sack games rank fourth in franchise history. Now, the big question is whether hell be able to climb any of those charts. The Chiefs have plenty of holes to fill this off-season, and that could have a major impact on Houstons future. Running mate Hali has a massive salary cap figure for next season and could be released if his deal isnt restructured. Wide receiver Dwayne Bowe has failed to live up to his massive contract and could be released. Both of those scenarios could free up money for Houston. Then theres the fate of Eric Berry, the safety who is battling cancer. Berry also carries a large contract into next season and its unlikely hell be able to play. That part will come eventually. What Im worried about is Eric. I care about his person, his health, his well-being, Dorsey said. Thats what Im focused on as we move forward here.NOTES: Reid said he expects LB Derrick Johnson and DE Mike DeVito to participate in some part of the off-season program. Both tore an Achilles tendon in Week 1. ... C Rodney Hudson will hit free agency but said he wants to return to Kansas City. No question, he said. ... QB Alex Smith (lacerated spleen) said he feels fine and will not miss any off-season work.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL cheap falcons jerseys cheap ravens jerseys cheap bills jerseys cheap bears jerseys cheap bengals jerseys cheap cowboys jerseys cheap lions jerseys cheap texans jerseys cheap colts jerseys cheap jaguars jerseys cheap chiefs jerseys cheap rams jerseys cheap dolphins jerseys cheap vikings jerseys cheap saints jerseys cheap giants jerseys cheap jets jerseys cheap eagles jerseys cheap steelers jerseys cheap 49ers jerseys ' ' '
